Install CS 1.6 from the Windows client download
This guide follows the Windows EXE linked from Atlas. If you own Counter-Strike on Steam, use the separate Steam installation guide. Choose the route before downloading so you do not mix two installations.
Identify the file you are installing
Atlas links to the publisher's cs16.exe package. Its recorded file details are 284.39 MB, client build 10815 and protocol 48. These describe that community package; they are not the Steam download size or proof that the installer has been independently scanned.
Open the publisher's file page and compare the filename and published checksum with your download. If the publisher has replaced the release, use the matching release details rather than forcing an old checksum to match.
Keep the installation separate
- Close any running copy of Counter-Strike. If you already play, copy your configuration and custom files to a backup folder first.
- Start the installer only after reviewing its source. Read its options and select a separate destination you can identify later.
- Do not install over your Steam game or another modified client. Keep enough free space for installed files and later map downloads; the EXE size is not the installed size.
- Finish the installation and check which executable the new shortcut opens. Record the game folder, especially if several copies are present.
Test the game before adding extras
Launch the newly installed copy and set your nickname, display resolution and audio. Create a local game on a standard map. Check movement, firing, sound and whether the menu remains usable after returning from the map.
Leave custom models and downloaded configurations out of this first test. A working baseline makes it possible to tell whether a later addition caused a problem. If the menu never appears, follow launch troubleshooting before trying servers.
Choose your first match
For multiplayer, select a real server and use its current address. For offline practice, identify the bot system already installed or follow a separate bot installation guide. A package described as classic does not establish which bot plugin is present.
After one successful session, save your preferred settings and restart once. You are ready to customise the client when the same installation launches reliably and keeps those settings.
