CS 1.6 on Windows 10: setup and existing installations
For Windows 10, first decide whether you are maintaining a working game or making a new installation. Preserve an existing setup before changing clients. Operating-system support and the ability to launch CS 1.6 are separate questions.

Review the support context
Standard Windows 10 support ended on 14 October 2025. Microsoft describes extended-update options separately, with eligibility and programme conditions. Check the status of your own device rather than reading this game guide as a claim that every Windows 10 installation remains supported.
Find the copy you actually use
Open the location associated with the working shortcut or Steam library entry. Record that folder before moving configs. An old desktop shortcut may lead to a different copy from the one you are editing, which makes a saved change appear to have no effect.
- Keep your personal configs and screenshots in a separate backup.
- Record the maps and bot add-ons you want to preserve.
- Do not merge an external client into the Steam installation.
Test before restoring a profile
- Launch the chosen copy on a standard local map.
- Set one visible preference, close normally and reopen to check persistence.
- Test sound and input without adding an old autoexec or model pack.
- Restore the personal config first, retest, then add other files individually.
Use the symptom to choose the next guide
If the game still works locally but a server times out, keep the working installation and investigate the connection. If a problem began immediately after copying settings, compare against the backup. When planning a move to another Windows PC, transfer the files you need only after its clean installation works; copying an entire old directory also carries over its unresolved problems.

Preserve a working installation before experimenting
If CS 1.6 already runs on this computer, save its personal settings before testing another package. Compare the shortcut target and game folder so you do not change the wrong installation. A local map helps verify input, sound and graphics independently of online services; operating-system support is a separate question from that launch test.
Questions before you play
Why do two shortcuts produce different settings?
They may launch different client folders or use different parameters. Check each target and the active configuration before assuming Windows has deleted or ignored your saved settings.
