CS 1.6 on Windows 8 and 8.1: check the installation
Treat Windows 8 and Windows 8.1 as distinct system versions when documenting a CS 1.6 problem. This page is for assessing an older installation and planning the next step, rather than promising a currently supported Steam setup.

Record the exact Windows version
Do not shorten every Windows 8.1 machine to Windows 8 in a support request. Record the exact edition and system architecture alongside the game source. Steam support ended for both Windows 8 and 8.1 on 1 January 2024; Microsoft’s Windows 8.1 support ended on 10 January 2023.
Trace the launch path
If a Start screen entry, desktop shortcut and copied game folder coexist, identify which one actually opens the game. Before editing a config, check that it belongs to that installation. Preserve the source folder until you have confirmed where the active game writes its settings.
| Item | What to record |
|---|---|
| Shortcut | Target game folder |
| Personal settings | Config filename and backup location |
| Add-ons | Bot or plugin name |
| Failure | Exact message and stage of launch |
Check the intended controls
On a laptop or convertible, test with the keyboard and pointing device you actually intend to use. A touchscreen alone does not establish whether the installed desktop game has an appropriate control scheme. Separate input problems from video or launch errors.
- Open a stock local map if the existing game launches.
- Check movement, aiming and menu navigation before adding custom binds.
- Close normally and reopen once to test that the chosen settings remain.
Prepare a clean destination
When moving to another computer, keep personal configs, screenshots and required custom maps together with notes about their use. Install the selected client on the destination before copying them back. Avoid carrying over every old executable and plugin simply because it was in the same folder. Review the destination system’s requirements separately from the game’s age.

Choose your next step
Confirm the exact Windows version before following a guide
Windows 8 and 8.1 should not be treated as interchangeable in every support document. Record which one is installed, then check requirements for the client and distribution platform separately. Back up your game folder and personal configs before migration, and test the destination installation before removing the working copy.
Questions before you play
What should I preserve before moving to another Windows installation?
Save personal configs, custom maps and their dependencies, plus the information needed to reinstall your chosen client. Keep credentials separate and do not assume copying executable files transfers account access.
